We are delighted to announce that we are the main sponsor for this year’s prestigious National Chef of the Year Award. The contest is one of the most anticipated events in the culinary calendar and has earned itself a reputation for discovering exceptional talent from chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, Alyn Williams and Mark Sargeant, all of whom won first place and consequently saw their careers take a momentous step towards success and recognition.
Introduced in 1972, the well-established competition is all about culinary skill and is judged on the entrant’s performance on that day. Previous triumphs will not be taken into consideration, which of course mimics the environment in any fast-paced commercial kitchen where the customer is ultimately the judge.
Previous judging panels have included names such as Philip Howard, Tom Kerridge, Atul Kochhar, Andrew Pern, Cyrus Todiwala, Angela Hartnett and Mark Sargeant amongst others. Philip Howard, ambassador and proprietor of two Michelin-starred The Square Restaurant commented ‘the craft guild has put together an exemplary competition, which progresses with the times and requires truly talented chefs to enter in order to do it justice. For those who do, the rewards are immense’.
Following a rigorous process of paper judging and regional heats for 40 semi-finalists, competitors who make it to the final will be expected to produce a creative lunch menu for two guests, within a timeframe of just two hours and must consist of a starter, main course and dessert.
The live final will take place at The Restaurant Show on 3rd October at the Olympia in London. The trade show is another popular industry event that attracts over 10,000 visitors, including restaurant owners, chefs and suppliers. Competing not just in front of the panel of judges, but live in front of hundreds of industry experts guarantees a final that is certain to be as intense as it will be exciting!
